Hazel ( Corylus avellana L )

Hazel growing

Hazel is very common in hedge rows, here you can see it growing in a hedge by a field.

Hazel grows very fast and an establíshed tree should be coppiced totally about every nine years. Coppicing is thought to increase the life of the tree by upto ten times.

Hazel shanks

Hazel comes in a large aray of colours as you can see in the photo, these sticks were all cut on the same day within 100 metres of each other. Hazel often grows quite straight requiring very little straightening.
